sitting here bored, so I figured I could do a post about recent or upcoming releases I’m excited to get my mitts on eventually! I literally have 50 books currently in my amazon.jp wishlist, though admittedly some of them are there after going through and trashing my magazines and being reminded of authors that I enjoyed but had somehow forgotten. Still, there are plenty of new and upcoming books I’m excited about as well.
first off, a book by a debut artist I’ve been excited about ever since I started to read her story running in Daria, Haji’s Double Hound. Her art style is really interesting and I love the facial expressions and proportioning of her characters, as well as the relationship between the two mains for this particular book. Unfortunately it’s currently on back-order so I’m gonna have to wait a while before I can read it.
as for Dear+, Miike Romuco released a book by them late in December that I accidentally missed out on even though it looks super cute. (tbh as a free! fan I can’t help but be reminded of Nagisa and Rei’s previous track teammate…) Then this month there’s Ten Count volume three, which I’m stoked about even though that story admittedly went in a direction I definitely wasn’t expecting. Then next month is Ogeretsu Tanaka‘s book through them. If you follow my personal blog you’ll already know how much I loved the story that had her debuting in Dear+. Admittedly a little disappointing, though, is that Masao Sangatsu still hasn’t released anything for her newest series…
for onBlue this month there was a new book released by Nobara Aiko that’s getting a lot of fanfare! Unfortunately, though, it’s also a backorder so there’ll be a bit of a wait before I can personally read it. A lesser-known bl publisher, Fleur Comics, released a book by Nishi Noriko that looks really cute—Focus.
through Chara another book I missed out on in December is this lovely-looking book by Natsukawa Shiori. Then this month they’ll be releasing a book by Minazuki Akira, which is always something to look forward to.
then we have a double-release by Kojima Lalako for Paradise View: one and two. Admittedly I’m a bit nervous for this release, since it seems a bit angstier than most of her stories and admittedly as much as I adore her overall I’ve always been more of a fan of her fluffier, more gentle stories. The double cover is really lovely, though, especially when placed side by side.
Rutile, ever the big-time releaser of some of my favorite stories, has a lot to offer me recently. Firstly, this month they released a new book by Misaki Usio, who I’ve really been loving these last couple years. Then next month they have a release by Uchida Tsuchi, and then something by one of my all-time favorite mangaka Hirakita Yuya as well. And lucky for me Hirakita is also releasing a book through Chocolat.
Rutile’s less-innocent sister line, Lynx, is then releasing a book by Ootsuki Miu! It feels like it’s been forever since there was last a new book by Ootsuki Miu through Lynx, which used to be one of the most active publishers of her work. I’m excited to see what kind of new stories she’ll have through them. And then drap is releasing a book by Shinozaki Mai, who iirc I’ve never read anything by but her cover is just beautiful.
finally, an anthology by Poe Backs Baby Comics, Hentai Play. Because I’ll be buying so many fluffy Rutile books I figured I’d better balance it out with this delightfully perverted-looking anthology that contains many great artists, such as Akahoshi Jake, Pii, Fujimako, as well as many artists I’ve never heard of before while us always a fun discovery experience!
Anyway, how about you guys? Any new or upcoming releases you’re particularly looking forward to?
my bl order for December came today! \o/ Well most of it because I also impatiently tossed Kojima Lalako and Tomoe Fumi’s January releases in my cart. But everything that was actually released in December is here so I figured I would do an ~unboxing~ first impressions post since I haven’t read any of them yet and it would at least give you a chance to see what I got in case I go AWOL again this month.
was feeling pretty antisocial and hermit-y today and didn’t feel like showering the second I got up so I put up a little note to let them know they could just leave the package. For a nice long time the DHL people knew to just leave it but idk I think the dude who used to deliver my stuff either got a new route or quit and this new person isn’t so fast on the uptake so he always knocks and waits for my signature s o b.
BUT HEY here is my precious unnecessarily large box full of cheesy homoerotic romance so let’s get to this unboxing now shall we.
One of my favorite sites is back from hiatus and brought with it some really great BL release news so I figured I’d share some of the ones I’m particularly excited about.
♔ → First, Chara’s July 25th releases!
Kojima Lalako “Ano Ko to Juliet”
Kitazawa Kyou “101ban wa Uke Tsukemasen!”
Hidaka Shouko “Yuuutsu na Asa” vol.4
Obviously, I’m sure you all know the one I have my eye on most: Kojima Lalako! It has officially been over a year since her initial 3-in-a-row releases and even though I get a taste of her work in magazines and anthologies every now and then it’s just not enough. I don’t think I’ve read many of her Chara releases so I can’t wait to get my hands on her book through them. Unfortunately I’ll have to either track it down while I’m on vacation or wait until late August, but I have my fingers crossed for an in-store pick-up! *A*)
♔ → Then Asuka’s late June releases list Takatsuki Noboru. It feels like forever since I’ve read something by her (him?? idk who cares) so I’ll definitely be tempted to pick that one up. The title is “Ore no Kokoro ni Fumikomu na!”
♔ → Craft then has a new Yamamoto Kotetsuko book lined up for early July, titled “Fukurou-kun to Kare”. Yamamoto’s books are never a miss for me personally, and I don’t think I’ve seen/read a single chapter of this one. Distressing! I guess I’ll have to shove it into my June order so I don’t have to wait forever to read it haha.
♔ → Psyche Delico then has a new book coming out through Citron. This one isn’t quite as exciting for me personally (since I buy Citron and thus already read a majority of the stories I’m sure) but I’ll definitely be buying it nonetheless just because it’s Psyche Delico. When I saw her name on the list I had my fingers crossed for a new book through Junet, but alas! Her Citron stories are good too so I hope everyone will still consider giving them a chance.
♔ → One I’m super super suuuuuuper pumped about is Mita Ori, who has a book “Shiro no Koro” through Marble in late July. I don’t know if you ladies recall, but she’s the author of one of my very favorite BL oneshots Mahou no Okusuri. Now that she’s officially releasing a book I hope more and more people will be able to read her stories, which are all very charming and go wonderfully with her sketchy art style. I highly recommend it!
♔ → Not as exciting for me personally since I’m not into doujinshi collections, but for hardcore Minazuki Akira fans there’s a new book to look out for: her doujinshi work will be compiled and released by Poe Backs/Fusion Comics in late July!
♔ → Moto Haruhira has a new book coming out through drap, “Mazu wa, Hitokuchi”, in late July as well. tbh I haven’t really been reading this one so closely in drap (sometimes it’s so annoying to keep up with series in magazines, unfortunately… orz;;) so I’ll probably be buying this. Her art is so cute and I don’t want to skip something that could potentially be really great but I haven’t given a proper chance to.
♔ → Finally, finally, Shinomiya Shino’s book through EDGE will be released on July 27th. Titled “The way I am”, it seems like such a charming story but since I don’t buy OPERA regularly I’ve missed so many chapters. I’m hoping after this, Aniya’s book will also be coming out soon. It does seem to have hit the climax…
♔ → Another one that feels like it’s been making me wait for a very very long time, Koiwazurai Shibito’s book through Junet will finally be released this coming June! In the few magazines I bought that had her, she seemed to have a penchant for writing perverted semi-depressing stories, which are my favorites. (see: Aniya’s Kangoku 69) So I would like to see them in full. ;; Finally, here’s my chance! Speaking of Junet, I wonder if they’re ever release Yonekura Kengo’s story sighhh.
♔ → And then the final one I wanted to talk about: drap already has their releases through November planned! Once again, Ootsuki Miu is their late-in-the-year pick and supposedly the compiled version of Vanilla Resort will be released November 2nd. Considering the official series is just starting (and there are so far only two chapters) that’s really planning ahead! But I guess that means there’s a lot of Ootsuki to expect in the coming months from drap? Other releases include Nekota Yonezou in August, and an amazing quadruple-whammy of Akahoshi Jake (yay!!), Yamada Maya, Hino Garasu and Konjiki Runa all in September. Thank goodness that’s an odd-numbered, non-anthology month!
♔ → for fans of Kinoshita Keiko, B’s-garden now has the POP images up for both her upcoming releases. I’m not as excited for Koyoi Omae to if only because I already read it regularly in HertZ, but I’m pretty pumped about the third and final volume of Ikusen no Yoru. Considering that cliffhanger volume two left off at. orz;;;
Also if you go to the B’s-garden main page you can see a larger version of Kusama Sakae’s novel illustration. *A*
♔ → LYNX has their previews up for the latest issue already! \o/ Minazuki Akira already has a new story running, which I’m pretty damn excited about df;ghd;fhdf also also Mio Junta and Rokuro Kuro’s color pages also look very beautiful. Another thing from this latest issue that I’m super excited about is Ike Reibun’s continuation of Tatsu no Otoshigo! I really liked that while it was running but it felt like it ended so abruptly sobbb. So I let out a pretty dumb excited noise when I saw ‘Tatsu no Otoshigo 2’ listed. Then of course there’s Nimoda Ai, Umematsu Machie, Kitazawa Kyou… definitely another great issue!
also related to LYNX, if you go to their site they now have sample pages up for both Nimoda Ai and Katsuragi’s releases. I highly recommend checking them out, since both artists have gorgeous styles and really cute stories.
♔ → another magazine coming out this month that I’m excited about (though in a more bittersweet way, since I probably can’t afford to buy it) is Daria! If you go to the actual magazine page they just listed the cover last night and it’s very cute. Also, the lineup. ;A;)/ Ahhh Ootsuki Miu and Kumonosuke!! I’m so tempted to buy it but I’ve already told myself countless times to just wait for the book releases. Who wants to make bets on whether I’m patient enough to hold out?
♔ → Not necessarily BL-related, but Kumota Haruko’s story through ITAN will be releasing its second volume early next month. So quick! orz;;; You can pre-order it here. Unfortunately I haven’t seen the cover illustration yet. I think last time it was posted on Comic Natalie before it was shared anywhere else so I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye out for it. Kumota Haruko’s first release of 2012! Hopefully this means 2012 will be full of her work.
♔ → The cover for the latest issue of Cab was finally revealed! This time it’s Hideyoshico. \*w*/ Also I’m glad to see Ogura Muku and Konohara Narise are back again this issue after a short hiatus last time. Castle Mango really always leaves so many things unresolved by the end of each chapter. orz;; I wonder when Konohara will start tying up the loose ends instead of constantly creating more. This time around, of course I’m happy to see yet more Kevin Komine and Komeri, and I’m also absolutely pumped to see more Mita Ori. Though it said there would be Kimura Hidesato in this issue and I don’t see her name… ;; Sad. I’m also sad to see there isn’t more Aako! I absolutely loved her story from Cab 16.
Anyway you can see more on the story titles and such here. It’s kind of interesting to see Komeri will evidently be starting a longer story again! Usually she just sticks to oneshots and her longer stories up to this point usually weren’t planned.
♔ → There is also now a more high-quality version of Canna’s cover posted up. Very pretty and dreamy—somewhat unlike most of the covers Canna has featured thusfar. As expected of Yamada Torico, though. Her watercolor work is seriously stunning.
♔ →I’m sure you all know by now that this month Hidaka Shouko will be releasing volume three of her hit series Hana wa Saku ka. However, did you know she’ll also be releasing a book through Hanaoto in February called Hatsukoi no Atosaki? This is definitely a good season for Hidaka Shouko fans!
Yamanaka Hiko | Marusumiya no Yometori
Recently I finally completed my Yamanaka Hiko collection by purchasing her two earliest books. Before, I just had the scans on the computer and I really really prefer to read Japanese comics in actual book form (English ones, too, for that matter but I unfortunately have less of a choice in that category) as opposed to squinting at the computer screen for an hour. So now I’m finally able to read her complete collection properly, which is really exciting!
As for Marusumiya itself, I liked the first story but I loved the second one. It starts out with a man who lives by a very strict, lonely schedule until he meets another man at work whom he can open up to more. But in the end, after they’ve opened up ‘too much’ to one another, could that be the end of their relationship? This was just one of those stories that really gave me that amazingly bittersweet heartache feeling—it was just the right amount of angst and longing, balanced well with some really adorable romance. Also, I just generally love when characters are just straight-out gay in BL. Usually it’s that whole “I’m not gay but I fell for this random guy” thing, which is also okay. But idk for some reason it makes me smile when the mangaka makes their character sincerely gay and shoulders them with the realistic troubles (in this case, not being able to get close to anyone in case they find out) that people can relate to a bit more.
Minazuki Akira | Noboseru Karada
This is another one where, though I really really liked the first story as well, I really enjoyed the second story. Though this time around it might be more because I was excited to get some new content from a book I was originally thinking I bought just to complete my collection of Minazuki’s works. The first story is about a breadshop owner named Suzumi with a very pretty face, and then a young, accomplished man, Kusaba, who meets Suzumi when Suzumi bathes at his bathhouse. While he’s initially attracted by Suzumi’s face, in the end he falls for Suzumi due to his hard work and determination (shown outward by all the burn scars on his arms that tend to be synonymous with people in cooking/baking professions) to achieve his dreams and sets out to make Suzumi his.
The second story is then about childhood friends who promise to be together forever when they’re young, but then a wrench is thrown in their plans when one considers moving abroad to study after high school. It’s a fairly simple story about the unsure feelings of parting with people you care about and the consequences that follow, and it’s yet another ones of those great stories with a perfect dash of angst to make the feelings of the characters really shine through. Also, it has some pretty delicious H scenes. :9 My favorite. Thank you, Minazuki, for another really great story!
Yamanaka Hiko | Hatsukoi no 70% wa,
And here is my other Yamanaka Hiko book. This is actually her debut comic and the one that really caught my eye re: her artwork, so it feels kind of special to go full-circle and really read it and give it the attention it deserves. I truly liked it, once again—I’m kind of a sucker for those types of stories where a guy will date girls over and over and wonder why the hell they’re never really all that special to him or never make him fall passionately in love, and then suddenly he’ll fall head-over-heels for another boy. That’s pretty much the premise of Hatsukoi: Kasukabe has spent much of his teenage life not really caring about anything—not his schoolwork or the people he dates or his future. He’s more of a ‘drifter’, finding people who work hard to achieve things confusing and weird. But that’s until he meets Sugiyama, the star runner for the school track team. Sugiyama is so passionate about track that he cares little about anything else, his mind always on practicing and times and stretching and figuring out how to improve. This astounds Kusakabe, and he finds himself oddly attracted to Sugiyama. And then before he knows it, his attraction has turned into something of a ‘schoolgirl crush’.
idk it’s just a really all-around charming story—not very deep but still a tiny bit thought-provoking in some aspects with very cute and relateable characters and a fairly realistic (by BL terms, of course) plot that is quite emotionally involving. I really liked it and am super glad I finally caved and bought the book and was able to read it to completion.
I figured it’s been a while since I’ve done something like this, and I got a package in the mail with a bunch of magazines/anthologies today so. Why not? Since I’m sure it’ll take me a lot of time to actually properly read them all and even then I’ll likely be too lazy to do a proper write-up anyway.
vague warning for NSFW content, though I don’t think I took many pictures of sex scenes.
They’re already on volume five! Sorry I haven’t really talked about iHertZ at all on here—to be honest I try to ignore its existence since I’m not a fan of digital books at all. Especially the ones from JP publishers, which put so many anti-piracy devices on that sometimes it’s almost impossible to read the damn things anyway. (I’m looking at you, b-Boy Cube…) But I figured I’d still post about this one because. Well. Kojima Lalako.
Yep: Kojima Lalako. It became impossible for me to ignore this issue because of the cover. And also, if you go to their site you can read a small sample of each story. So that’s what I did, and now I am hooked not only on Kojima Lalako’s but also Minazuki Akira’s. orz;;; Why can’t I learn to just stay away from these things; it would save me so much money! Watch me end up buying it when I get home sob.
Anyway, you can click the past issues as well and you can still buy them as well as just sample what they have to offer. Volume four has Tomoe Fumi, which I find very tempting. (But I haven’t checked the sample yet since I have to get ready for work blehhh.) Volume two has more Minazuki Akira and also Serihara Yuuki. And then volume one has more Serihara and then some Yoneda Kou.
Hopefully they’re still available on Renta using points. /;A;\
In honor of her third tankoubon being released in just a couple days’ time I figured it wouldn’t hurt to write a proper comprehensive post about a mangaka I really love yet for some reason don’t talk about quite as much: Minazuki Akira. I initially discovered Minazuki’s work in HertZ and also added her tankoubon for Konya wa Take-Out nite to my wishlist even though I hadn’t realized at the time that the artist I was seeing in my anthology was the same as the mangaka whose gorgeous cover had completely taken me in. It wasn’t until a while later that I really took notice of Minazuki’s name, and then my love for her was locked in when her debut book was released as a scanlation and I was able to stop feeling overwhelmed by her incredibly unusual art and just enjoy her works wholeheartedly.
So in six or so days is Minazuki Akira’s third release through HertZ, and the cover was just finally posted! Very exciting, since I love Minazuki’s color artwork. (Well, I also love her black and white artwork, so I guess I just love new artwork from her in general.) Sorry it’s still really small, since I stole it off HertZ’s site.
A very pretty, slightly ero cover that alludes very well to their relationship! Unfortunately HertZ still hasn’t released a preview or anything, but they did already put up the POP image and it’s also very cute.
Please go to their site to see it in full size! Hopefully a preview will also be posted soon sd;glj;ghgsd I personally really liked this story so I definitely recommend it. Minazuki’s art is just so pretty and it has a great tense atmosphere.
Sorry that this blog is so dead lately. orz I really don’t know where my spirit to post has gone. So much to talk about but I put it off for so long that news gets old.
♔ → First off, Kobato Mebaru now has a twitter account for her BL releases! Previously she only had one under her shoujo pen name. She doesn’t post much, but it’s exciting nonetheless. Also, iirc she mentioned something about having a story in Girls Love -Strawberry Milk Shake- which is a new GL anthology. I don’t think I’ve ever read a GL manga by Kobato Mebaru before so I’d be excited to see it!
♔ → The cover for the new issue of Rutile has been posted. This time it’s Hidaka Shouko! Sadly I didn’t buy this issue since Matsumoto Miecohouse is taking a short hiatus, but I’m still jealous of everyone who could afford it this month. The Yamamoto Kotetsuko color page looks really cute and I’d love to see her new story sd;lgjsddfg I guess I’ll have to wait for the tankoubon this time around.
♔ → And then Rutile’s sister line LYNX now has the previews up for their releases from this month on their site. You should definitely check them out—especially Minazuki Akira’s! If you’re having trouble finding them, they’re the list of covers next to the magazine release information on the main page.
♔ → The newest issue of Canna has been released, and along with it the anthology page on Canna’s website has been updated with pictures and descriptions of this month’s stories. Ahhhh so excited for Junketsu Drop as always. Kijitora said it’s another cute chapter but their feelings still aren’t reaching each other. orz;; As expected, with those two. But I’m also pretty pumped for Yamada Torico and Snae Hata. Their stories are always something worth looking forward to.
♔ → Actually, since the topic of Yamada Torico was brought up, she has a release through drap in early September!! Yesss, her second BL release! Kanashii Hito wa Doko ni mo Inai, for release on September third. I love her stories—if you haven’t read anything by her before I recommend checking out her debut comic Clara wa Itsumo Kizudarake. She always injects a great sense of melancholy into her work, and it really sets her apart.
♔ → Another exciting upcoming release is one I’ve been waiting for for a loooong time: Gojoe Tiger’s debut tankoubon! For sale on September 30th, Oujisama no Hiyaku Jikken. I hope it sells well and her manga career is really able to take off!
♔ → Two pretty covers I’ve been quite enamored by lately:
First is the debut issue of Hanamaru Manga, cover illustration by Ogura Muku. The book itself doesn’t have Ogura Muku, but has many great authors such as Koiwazurai Shibito, Hirakita Yuya and Honma Akira. Isn’t the cover so pretty, though?? Ahhh Ogura Muku, so amazing at creating gorgeous cover art. ;; Speaking of her gorgeous color artwork, there’s also this amazing cover of a novel released next month.
Then, of course, we can’t forget about Watanabe Asia’s beautiful color illustration for the official release of Nibiiro no Hana! So lovely! Watanabe Asia’s beautiful young boys always make me feel like such a creep. orz
♔ → In other release news, something worth getting excited over is Ike Reibun’s upcoming comic through HertZ that was just announced today for release in early September. If I recall correctly, this will be her first book through HertZ line. Though I was a bit disappointed, admittedly, to see her name and have it not be the second volume of Not Equal. orz;;; It feels like I’ve been waiting forever for the second volume of that manga.
♔ → Est Em’s release Happy End Apartment has been pushed back again from early to mid August. Hopefully this will be the last time her release date is changed.
♔ → Finally, HertZ! The new cover has been posted to their website, this time by Yamada Shiro. Ahhh I’m really excited, mostly for the next chapter of Hakumokuren. I know something big has to happen!! Hopefully it won’t be another super short chapter. ;; Also, as expected, going from the title of Yoneda Kou’s work this is definitely not a continuation of the story she originally had running in CRAFT. I wonder why she switched lines instead of completing Yorube Naki Mono…? The world may never know.
