my order for July finally came wahhhhh. I had a lot of drama over this order, because part of me wanted to buy through Honto again (for the cheaper shipping) but Honto doesn’t stock Boy’s Pierce and there was no way in hell I was going to not buy Boy’s Pierce this month because I needed (NEEDED!!!) to know if Kou-chan was going to cheat on Kishi. It was of utmost importance. And then I really really wanted Toshishita Kareshi no Renai Kanriguse but uh… evidently every other fujoshi in Japan also wanted that book because it’s been backstocked for rerelease on August 12th. So much for that. Then Kevin Komine’s book went out of stock. So. I had to cancel and redo and rethink this order about a million times. Life is so hard for this unfortunate little fujoshi.
but it’s here now (except one book that should come tomorrow) so–! We can rejoice!
first off can we just laugh at how ridiculously and unnecessarily large BexBoy GOLD is? This is my first time buying it, and I already knew it was bigger than most, but THAT BIG? Really? I’m already running hilariously low on space to store and display all my books ahhhh.
ack I meant to do this review over a month ago but I’m just getting around to it now, sorry. orz;; My story for this particular book is that while it was released in June, I didn’t even know of its existence until my sister found it on Amazon and was like “what’s with all these ’48’-themed BL anthologies??” Unfortunately at that point I couldn’t buy it until after Japan because it was past my final pre-trip order, and while I put it in my wishlist I promptly forgot about it. However, while wandering the Akihabara Toranoana on vacation I stumbled across it on display and they had it so you could look through a bunch of sample pages and it was so wonderfully porn-y and barely censored that there was no way I could resist and I bought it on the spot.
Which means obviously the sample pages I’m posting photos of are very much NSFW. Don’t blame me if you look through them at the office and get a porn intervention from the boss.
Well I was going through my books that arrived from my order in August and I figured a lot of people said it would be okay it I just talked randomly about BL-related personal stuff so. Here’s my boring post about the books I’ve gotten so far from my August order. Still yet to arrive are Castle Mango (I shoved it in my order when it was still supposed to come out in August so now they’re just treating it like a perorder orz) and Yamada Maya’s book through drap (which should be here today actually) so I can’t really talk about those. But I can talk about my other stuff that has arrived recently so sdgh;ldsg;s
Initially I was just taking out the inside pamphlets from the books and placing them in the special box of BL stuff where I keep pamphlets and special papers and extras. Unfortunately I had to start using another box recently—
—since the other one is too full. Thank goodness I am an obsessively storage-oriented person so I had an extra box lying around ready to become a BL pamphlet container.
Anyway, onto talking about my actual books.
sorry in advance that this post is kind of long and image-heavy. /;w;\
wahhhh it’s been over a month, hasn’t it? Sorry about my absence. I had a blast in Japan hitting up bookstores, to the point where I was stressed by the end that my suitcases would be overweight. So obviously I bought lots of books. Many of them were to complete artist collections, but I also got many great new books so hopefully I’ll be able to talk about them here. So to start, here are some quickie reviews for the books I’ve read so far.
Kamokawa Teruchi | I’ll call you mine
I read this one on the flight back and not only did it take up quite a lot of time (it’s a pretty thick tankoubon!) but it made me learn the embarrassment of crying on an airplane. The general plot is that it’s about two boys who’re incredibly close childhood friends, and they’re in love but while one of them (Kaede) is willing to take the leap the other (Yamato) is terrified of having feelings for another boy. The trouble in their previously free-flying relationship starts when Yamato brings a girl home with him from college–Kaede, who was previously happy with just being close friends, suddenly feels Yamato slipping from him.
A majority of the book has the two boys at odds with each other–Yamato with his girlfriend, and Kaede forcing himself to date and sleep with an abusive coworker to try and get over his lost love. So for people who don’t like high-angst relationships like that, I wouldn’t recommend this book at all. But I thought the payoff when they got together was wonderful, and I found the characters very easy to become attached to and develop feelings for.
Koiwazurai Shibito | Suki tte Iwaretai
Kind of snazzy, I went to Bookoff Ueno one day and this book was in the full-price section and then came back the next day and it was in clearance. So I definitely had to grab it. I read this one on the plane as well, which was probably not a very good idea since it has a lot of sex scenes. Oh well. This one is a collection of Koiwazurai’s oneshots, previously released either as doujinshi or in other publications where she didn’t have enough stuff released for them to give her a proper book. From serious stories of men falling in love for the first time after previously only ever knowing the enjoyment of sex, to comedic strange shorts about office sexual harassment, this book has a little bit of everything.
Personally, I really enjoyed it! In particular the more serious stories, such as the fourth one about a love-love gay couple who still have their share of issues in their home life. And the first story, where a young man lives a nonchalant life filled with various sexual partners but ends up falling in love for the first time–and ends up hurting one of his only good friends while running away from his feelings. Koiwazurai has a really strange way of leaving her stories off on an unfinished feeling, but such a writing style has a really dreamy feel I think.
Furukawa Fumi | Koisuru Bitch-kun
Okay let’s get all the laughing about the title over with in the beginning—by “bitch-kun” Furukawa means it in more classic terms: a female dog used primarily for breeding. Sugiura has long respected the comics sensei he works as an assistant for, but there’s one issue: Komatsu-sensei is a complete horny pervert. Constantly whining that he wants to have sex while they should be working, Sugiura ends up taking on Komatsu’s sexual needs as just another part of his ‘assisting’. But Sugiura doesn’t like that kind of ‘sex friends’ relationship dynamic—when he’s having sex with someone, he wants it to matter. And he can’t tell if Komatsu feels the same way, or he just likes sex so much that anyone will do.
Aside from the main story (which is three chapters), the rest of the book is oneshots—all equally as fluffy and cute. Mostly stories of first love between young men. Furukawa Fumi’s art is just so ridiculously adorable, and if you’re like me and love seeing flustered blushing boys then her work should be right up your alley. So glad I ultimately decided to get this book, but really with a cover like that who could resist?
Anyway that’s it for now! Sorry about my absence and all emails and comments that have gone unanswered. I’m going to try to get caught up with everything in the next week or so.
One of my favorite sites is back from hiatus and brought with it some really great BL release news so I figured I’d share some of the ones I’m particularly excited about.
♔ → First, Chara’s July 25th releases!
Kojima Lalako “Ano Ko to Juliet”
Kitazawa Kyou “101ban wa Uke Tsukemasen!”
Hidaka Shouko “Yuuutsu na Asa” vol.4
Obviously, I’m sure you all know the one I have my eye on most: Kojima Lalako! It has officially been over a year since her initial 3-in-a-row releases and even though I get a taste of her work in magazines and anthologies every now and then it’s just not enough. I don’t think I’ve read many of her Chara releases so I can’t wait to get my hands on her book through them. Unfortunately I’ll have to either track it down while I’m on vacation or wait until late August, but I have my fingers crossed for an in-store pick-up! *A*)
♔ → Then Asuka’s late June releases list Takatsuki Noboru. It feels like forever since I’ve read something by her (him?? idk who cares) so I’ll definitely be tempted to pick that one up. The title is “Ore no Kokoro ni Fumikomu na!”
♔ → Craft then has a new Yamamoto Kotetsuko book lined up for early July, titled “Fukurou-kun to Kare”. Yamamoto’s books are never a miss for me personally, and I don’t think I’ve seen/read a single chapter of this one. Distressing! I guess I’ll have to shove it into my June order so I don’t have to wait forever to read it haha.
♔ → Psyche Delico then has a new book coming out through Citron. This one isn’t quite as exciting for me personally (since I buy Citron and thus already read a majority of the stories I’m sure) but I’ll definitely be buying it nonetheless just because it’s Psyche Delico. When I saw her name on the list I had my fingers crossed for a new book through Junet, but alas! Her Citron stories are good too so I hope everyone will still consider giving them a chance.
♔ → One I’m super super suuuuuuper pumped about is Mita Ori, who has a book “Shiro no Koro” through Marble in late July. I don’t know if you ladies recall, but she’s the author of one of my very favorite BL oneshots Mahou no Okusuri. Now that she’s officially releasing a book I hope more and more people will be able to read her stories, which are all very charming and go wonderfully with her sketchy art style. I highly recommend it!
♔ → Not as exciting for me personally since I’m not into doujinshi collections, but for hardcore Minazuki Akira fans there’s a new book to look out for: her doujinshi work will be compiled and released by Poe Backs/Fusion Comics in late July!
♔ → Moto Haruhira has a new book coming out through drap, “Mazu wa, Hitokuchi”, in late July as well. tbh I haven’t really been reading this one so closely in drap (sometimes it’s so annoying to keep up with series in magazines, unfortunately… orz;;) so I’ll probably be buying this. Her art is so cute and I don’t want to skip something that could potentially be really great but I haven’t given a proper chance to.
♔ → Finally, finally, Shinomiya Shino’s book through EDGE will be released on July 27th. Titled “The way I am”, it seems like such a charming story but since I don’t buy OPERA regularly I’ve missed so many chapters. I’m hoping after this, Aniya’s book will also be coming out soon. It does seem to have hit the climax…
♔ → Another one that feels like it’s been making me wait for a very very long time, Koiwazurai Shibito’s book through Junet will finally be released this coming June! In the few magazines I bought that had her, she seemed to have a penchant for writing perverted semi-depressing stories, which are my favorites. (see: Aniya’s Kangoku 69) So I would like to see them in full. ;; Finally, here’s my chance! Speaking of Junet, I wonder if they’re ever release Yonekura Kengo’s story sighhh.
♔ → And then the final one I wanted to talk about: drap already has their releases through November planned! Once again, Ootsuki Miu is their late-in-the-year pick and supposedly the compiled version of Vanilla Resort will be released November 2nd. Considering the official series is just starting (and there are so far only two chapters) that’s really planning ahead! But I guess that means there’s a lot of Ootsuki to expect in the coming months from drap? Other releases include Nekota Yonezou in August, and an amazing quadruple-whammy of Akahoshi Jake (yay!!), Yamada Maya, Hino Garasu and Konjiki Runa all in September. Thank goodness that’s an odd-numbered, non-anthology month!
well that didn’t last long. But hey, here’s something I can talk about without the necessity of a camera: books that are coming out soon.
♔ → first off, as many of you likely know Ootsuki Miu will be releasing a new book later this month through Daria called Ijiwaru na Hito. As if the fact that it’s Ootsuki Miu and the title that hints at adorable love-love bullying didn’t already leave you impatient for the book to be in your hands now, Daria has since posted a preview! It looks ridiculously cute and I can’t wait to get the book so I can actually read it. ;; Unfortunately, I have yet to find a cover illustration.
♔ → Shockingly, Uchida Tsuchi already has a new book lined up through Hanaoto for late April! It feels like just last month that she released her second book, Barairo Melancholy, and yet it’s already time for book number three! I really can’t say how glad I am that she’s not turning out to be one of those BL artists who releases one cute book and then disappears off that map. That happens all too often in the BL genre and it makes me super sad.
♔ → Then through Dear+, Miike Romuco has a March release. The world can really never have too much Miike Romuco.
♔ → One I’m personally reaaaaaaally excited for is volume two of Sakura Sakuya’s Oinarisama no Honey Bunny for release in late March. Even though I initially side-eyed the series after I finally gave it a chance I got pretty hooked. orz;;; I really can’t help it—Sakura Sakuya’s sense of humor and sex appeal are both ace!
♔ → Another Chara release, the final volume of Nanahikari is coming out in late March as well! It’s kind of weird to see this one end, because it’s one of the few series I got into fairly early on and then saw through to the finish. I really thought this one would never end. I’m kind of nervous to know who Hikaru ends up with! /o\ I wonder if I should buy it and take the chance.
♔ → basso has a new book, Naka-san no Nagare, coming out through Edge Comix on March 24th! This one caught me by surprise since iirc basso hasn’t even been in opera for a while now?? Perhaps it’s stuff that ran between all of her related series… Or maybe stuff that was originally published as doujinshi? I guess we’ll just have to see!
♔ → The HertZ/Craft releases are looking pretty glorious! For HertZ it’s SHOOWA in early March followed by Towa on the 22nd. If you go here and check it out SHOOWA’s release already has a cover and Towa’s POP is really cute. (You can also see Kano Shiuko’s and Yamamoto Kotetsuko’s covers now!) Then CRAFT’s release for late March is Okuyama Puku! Her POP is also adorable, and you can view it here.
♔ → Another one of my personal favorites, Koiwazurai Shibito, has a book coming out through Aqua in mid-March! The title definitely leaves me a bit curious: Wakaresaseya no Koi. Koiwazurai’s art and stories have yet to disappoint me so I’ll definitely be picking this book up.
♔ → Perhaps saving the best for last, a book I know many other people will also be excited to hear about: Junko’s annual Gush release has been placed for March 10th, Kasa no Shita, Futari! I’ve only gotten to see the Chinese scans for this one, unfortunately, so I don’t even know what it’s about aside from that there’s a teacher and three guys and sex. Though there seems to be less cute sexiness than Junko’s previous stories, I’m still pretty damn excited!
→ Actually I was considering putting this blog on hiatus since I’m currently going through some really stressful stuff in my personal life and, as fun as this blog is to run, sometimes posting here feels tedious and stressful. But I don’t really want to put it on hiatus, just in case I read something that makes me so passionate that posting about it is very simple and fun. But I just wanted to let you all know that even though I’m not posting as much and it takes forever for me to reply to comments, I am still around and I still answer my emails (slowly) and formspring questions (somewhat less slowly) so if you ever need to contact me with a question then you need not hesitate.
→ Anyway, official blurb aside I just have a couple small things I want to talk about! First, Kobato Mebaru has the cover of F-Book Comics’ second BiQ anthology!
I think it’s really cute, and just in general it’s nice to see something from her again even if it’s just a anthology cover. I’ve been trying to keep up with her shoujo title that runs in Sylph, but that still doesn’t feel like enough haha.
→ Then there’s also Gateau’s latest covers by Koiwazurai Shibito and Kumonosuke.
To be honest, after reading Shiawase ni Naru no sa! I have become a bit obsessed with Kumonosuke. Yesterday volumes three and four of Gateau arrived and she had a story in there and I pretty much shrieked in excitement and accidentally slammed the book shut when I saw her art haha. I totally did not budget for this new-found love-affair oops. So now if I want her new book I’ll have to slip a different one out of my order. And I should probably look into purchasing her debut tankoubon as well. orz
→ drap’s upcoming releases are pretty exciting. I know a lot of you have been asking me fairly often about when Ootsuki Miu’s Familiar will be released, so I’m happy to let you know that it’s scheduled for early November. Like with Ouji Hiroimashita, it’s going to have a special-addition first printing. (Perhaps it will also come with a nice booklet of gratuitous sex scenes!) In late October drap will be releasing Yukimura’s Honto no Tokoro, and also Yoshizuka Mayako’s debut in early October. And of course, Chidori Peko’s tankoubon is still scheduled for late September. Lots to look forward to from them!
→ Also release news, through Hanaoto Miike Romuko will be releasing a book in late October. I’ve been excitedly waiting for a new book by her so I’ll have to try and be patient.
→ Finally, the next issue of Dear+ is very tempting! Miike Romuko, Ootsuki Miu and a color page by Yamanaka Hiko. Speaking of releases I’ve been wishing on for quite a long time now, I hope Yamanaka Hiko releases something new soon. My life feels so empty without being able to read anything new from her. Oh well, I guess at least I have her wonderful story in onBLUE.
